A Chance to Say “Thank You”

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others, at whatever cost.

-Arthur Ashe

Washington D.C. – There was a time, in the not too distant past, when the average American would have told you that they had lost faith in the idea of a “hero”. Today, every American can point to someone that they know and think of as a hero – a family member, a friend or a co-worker, whose name appears on the news or in the local paper garnering a few moments of fame. However, the true hero is a rarely recognized member of a small and faceless community.

The members of the Retired Military Officers Association (RMOA, www.rmoa.org) know something about membership in that community, though few of them would actually say that they see themselves as heroes. Their concept of what is required of a hero is a result of a life spent sacrificing, trusting, and believing with others in a common set of principles and values. It is borne of first-hand experiences with life, sacrifice and death. And, ultimately, it is the result of a first-hand realization that in a country of more than 300 million people, so few have proudly paid the price for the freedoms that are enjoyed by so many.

These brave men and women, along with so many others serving our country in peacetime and in war, have joined together to honor the Heroes’ Heroes and to enable the rest of us to say a long overdue, “Thank you”.

The mistress of ceremonies, Ms. Patricia Williams, President, Omega Technologies, Inc. and a member of RMOA.
